Teaching Philosophy
A teacher is anyone that pushes others to challenge their selves to strive for knowledge. They are the people that support the younger generation to evolve and innovate for the future. As a teacher, my goal is to encourage them to find their path of success. I want to give them the tools and skills that they can use in the future. Joining the UTeach program has helped me develop one the critical aspect of teaching, making school relevant to them. School teaches all sort of knowledge, but as a teacher, our purpose is to make that knowledge applicable in some way or form. Knowledge without reason feels empty, but knowledge with value can empower an individual.
What I want to accomplish as a teacher is to teach students how to learn and set goals. What I want my students to be able to do is practice the art of learning. Learning is the act of failures and trials that challenge their schema to something that they understand. My job as an instructor is to guide them through that process and challenge them to take learning into their own hands. I want to give them the skills to go into the world knowing that they can be put into a position and not be afraid to learn on their own.
The classroom environment that I want to establish is one that students and I work towards goals whether it be learning goals or performance goals. I think letting them set their personal goals within the classroom will give them both performance and learning goals. It encourages them to challenge themselves to improve, and it is realistic, because not everyone will like what they are doing, but they should be able to set goals to develop whatever skills they want. This aspect of setting goals also goes into teaching them how to set goals. In my opinion teaching students how to set a goal with a timeline, with a measurement of growth, and having specific, will teach them skills that they can transfer over from school to life. One way that I want to accomplish that is asking them to set a social justice goal. I want to teach students through advocacy, by asking students to take a stance on something and try to incorporate what they are learning to see if it make a difference. My goal is to teach students that the knowledge they are learning can impact others, and all that I am doing is guiding them through that knowledge.
